General description

IK (Railway Scientific and Technical Centre), former part of the PKP - Polish State Railways, since 1951 has been the leading railway research centre in Poland, covering all subjects or a railway technology. Since 2000, the IK has been a R&D unit subordinated to the Ministry of Infrastructure, but basically commercial, subsidised below 10% of the turnover. However, some of self-arranged and/or ordered projects, particularly a fundamental research, are financed by governmental science research financing agencies. IK has been participating in several 5th and 6th FP RTD projects. We are members of the 6th FP Network of Excellence “EURNEX”. IK is an affiliated member of the UIC, an associated member of the OSZhD, and a member of the ECTRI – European Conference of Transport Research Institutes.

Expertise and capacity

IK has been authorised to issue qualification certificates for systems and products to be used within Polish State Railways. IK is the recognised Notified Body for railway interoperability directives, Id no. 1467. There are three accredited research laboratories distinguished from the Institute’s organisational structure, specialising in strictly defined areas of responsibility and research procedures. IK is recognised by German Federal Railway Office (EBA). IK owns the Test Track Loop in Zmigrod, which allows performing various rolling stock tests including crashworthiness tests and railway noise measurements on the reference track section. Our representatives have been participating in European Standardisation Committees (CEN and CENELEC). We are the host of two Technical Committees of the Polish Standardisation Committee (PKN).
